Preparation for study abroad--Bank Account

I have a public bank account which does not have the 'PLUS' logo at the back:

I heard someone's suggestion to open a HSBC account because it is also popular and convenient to use in UK. However, when we went to HSBC office, a senior consultant asked our purpose to open the account. Actually I only want to open an account which could be used overseas and once I reached UK, I will open a local account and withdraw a lump sum of money from the HSBC account (with a charge of RM10 per transaction), transfer it into my local (uk) account.

I was told that HSBC Malaysia and HSBC UK do not have a share system. You can't link the account together. Your HSBC account of Malaysia could be dealed as a foreign account in UK. There are still charges.

The senior consultant is so experience as he knows that many student only need the account for once/temporary, so he suggested us not to open account in HSBC.

He says that Public Bank, Maybank, (and perhaps other banks also?) could be used in overseas but just your card must have the 'PLUS' sign/logo at the back. Same, the transaction will be charged RM10 every times you withdraw money.

Hence I went to Public Bank and open a Joint Account with my name and my father's name. You must tell the person that you are going to use it overseas, and they might have something to do or inform you about the details.

And, I applied a card, and my father also request for an extra card. You are allowed to do so. This is because if my card was lost in UK, at least my dad could send the card for me. Another good thing is that he could check the balance in the account.

About which bank you could apply, I will update it soon.

Hope that my sharing could helps you :)
